Aluminum alloy is one of the most widely used nonferrous metal structural materials in industry. It has been widely used in aviation, aerospace, automobile, mechanical manufacturing, shipbuilding and chemical industry. Aluminum alloy density is low, but the strength is high, close or exceed the high quality steel, good plasticity, can be processed into various profiles, with excellent conductivity, thermal conductivity and corrosion resistance, widely used in industry, the use of steel only. Some aluminum alloys can be heat-treated to obtain good mechanical properties, physical properties and corrosion resistance.

The density of pure aluminum (P =2.7g/cm3) is about 1/3 of iron, the melting point is low (660), aluminum is a face centered cubic structure, so it has high plasticity (Delta: 32~40%, 70~90%), easy to process, and can be made into various profiles and plates, and has good corrosion resistance.

All kinds of aircraft use aluminum alloy as the main structural material. Skins, beams, ribs, stringers, spacers and landing gear can be made of aluminum alloy. Depending on the purpose of the aircraft, the amount of aluminum is also different. Civil aircraft with emphasis on economic benefits are widely used because of the low price of aluminum alloys, such as Boeing 767 passenger aircraft aluminum alloy accounted for about 81% of the body weight. Military aircraft require relatively good operational performance to reduce the amount of aluminum, such as a F-15 high performance fighter with a maximum flying speed of 2.5 of the Maher number, using only 35.5% aluminum alloy.

The crew compartment, the front fuselage, the middle fuselage, the rear fuselage, the vertical tail, the flap, the lift aileron and the horizontal tail are all made of aluminum alloy. The main structural materials of various artificial earth satellites and space probes are also aluminum alloys.
